Ambassador of Energy Efficiency Award

September 16, 2013 (CLEVELAND, OHIO) Famicos Foundation will receive Efficiency Smart’s Ambassador of Efficiency Award on Wednesday, September 18 at 10 a.m. at its University Tower apartment building, located at 1575 East Boulevard. The award will be presented to Famicos Foundation in recognition of its commitment and innovation in reducing energy use, which was demonstrated by its successful implementation of energy-efficient lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) measures.

“We congratulate the Famicos Foundation for receiving the Ambassador of Energy Efficiency Award, said Ivan Henderson, Cleveland Public Power Commissioner. “Cleveland Public Power’s mission is to provide reliable and affordable energy services to our customers, and through our partnership with Efficiency Smart, we were able to assist The Famicos Foundation further its commitment to provide affordable housing to Cleveland residents. Collaborations are important as we work to reduce the City of Cleveland’s carbon footprint.”

As a result of the project, Famicos Foundation is expected to save 799 mega-watt hours (MWh) of energy annually, $65,200 annually, and $914,000 over the lifetime of the installed measures. Additionally, the net project cost was reduced by $32,000 with incentives from Efficiency Smart.

Famicos Foundation worked with an Efficiency Smart energy consultant and account manager for technical project assistance and to verify savings potential. These resources were made possible through a partnership between Efficiency Smart and Cleveland Public Power, designed to save its electric customers money through energy efficiency.

“Rehabilitating historic properties is a large part of Famicos Foundation’s mission,” said Michael Bier, Project Manager for Famicos Foundation. “Efficiency Smart has helped Famicos to incorporate the latest electrical technology into several century-old properties, making them as energy-efficient as new construction. Technology such as LED lighting, motion-controlled lighting and high-efficiency HVAC can add a large expense to a historic rehabilitation, but Efficiency Smart helps us absorb the up-front cost, allowing significant energy savings throughout the years of building operations.  Although thorough and precise with its requirements, the Efficiency Smart program is highly streamlined, with minimal paperwork and very quick turn-around by program staff, it could not be easier to use. Famicos has partnered with Efficiency Smart at three historic rehabilitations, ultimately reducing energy costs by thousands of dollars. Famicos Foundation is grateful for the Ambassador of Energy Efficiency Award.”

The Ambassador of Energy Efficiency Award recognizes entities that have completed substantial energy efficiency projects. To be considered for the award, companies must be an electric customer of a utility that partners with Efficiency Smart and complete a project that results in significant energy savings for the community.

Efficiency Smart’s services include rebates for energy-efficient residential products; free removal of old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers from homes; and rebates for more than 90 energy-efficient products and services for businesses. Efficiency Smart also offers technical assistance, account management services and customized financial incentives for large commercial and industrial customers. Efficiency Smart was established by American Municipal Power for the benefit of its member communities. It is administered under contract with the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation. Operations are based in Columbus, Ohio.
